The Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo (HI) is the sole research institution in Japan established by a national university and dedicated to the study of historical material spanning Japan’s pre-modern history from the eighth to the nineteenth century. Its mission is to collect and analyse various historical material from both domestic and international sources and then compile and publish them as collections of Japanese historical material spanning 150 years. These efforts aim to benefit both academia and society. The HI has developed a robust research system to survey and study historical material from Japan and abroad, and then convert the accumulated historical information and research findings into research resources. It thus supports the academic foundation of Japanese history through dissemination of valuable knowledge resources in the form of publications. In this workshop, we will showcase the key features of our databases, along with the HI Lab launched in March 2023 and updated data on English translations available in the Summary database of the Ishin Shiryo.
